Manish Malhotra receives a standing ovation at the recent fashion awards in Hong Kong
Style, substance and glamour have a new synonym – Moet & Chandon. The champagne giant proved themselves to be on top of their game yet again, hosting their ‘Tribute to Asian Fashion Designers 2006’ in Hong Kong in their trademark style.
Held at the Four Seasons hotel, the champagne soiree and awards ceremony applauded the genius of couture designers from Asia – Manish Malhotra from India, Mary Ma from China, Dorian Ho from Hong Kong, the Habenormal designer trio from Korea and Paris-based duo Shawnyi who originally hail from Taiwan.
The glittering, invitation-only ceremony lived up to Moet’s tag of ‘Be Fabulous’ with Swarovski crystals adorning everything from the couture creations of all the designers, the stage, the bars, tables and awards.
Catering to the crème de la crème of Asian society, the sit-down show and dinner then gave way to a rollicking high society party.
Following the theme of light, all the designers made liberal use of Swarovski crystals on their garments, yet adding a twist to the terms and connotations of ‘champagne’. While some focused on the colour, others played with volume denoting the bubble effect of the beverage.
Still others added a lacy, whimsical ‘Josephine’ touch to their designs and some used organic materials only.
In the midst of all the couture gowns, Manish Malhotra’s ‘Culture colours Couture’ theme stayed true to its roots and the sarees, lehengas and sherwanis stood out as a very welcome change. The understated use of crystals and the interplay of champagne colours with pinks, red and tangerine brought the audience to their feet in repeated standing ovations.
As each designer showed off their last creation – the ‘Moet dress’ created specifically keeping in mind the intricacies of champagne, Manish’s shimmering lehenga in old gold and Swarovski drew gasps of admiration followed by a thunderous applause.
A fantastic achievement in the high glam world of Asian couture for a designer who has already wowed both India and Dubai with his creations for the past 16 years.
